NMSU’s “Autumn Overture” series features jazz and orchestra concerts this weekend

Leora Zeitlin

Concert season is in full swing this week at NMSU, and swinging is just what will happen when the Jazz Ensembles, directed by Dr. Frank “Pancho” Romero, perform on Friday night. The concert is called “Big Phat Band: The Music of Gordon Goodwin” and will feature the music and arrangements of the acclaimed composer, conductor, and leader of the “Big Phat Band.” Romero came to KRWG to talk with Intermezzo host Leora Zeitlin about Goodwin, the upcoming concert, and jazz activities at NMSU. The concert is part of the ‘Autumn Overture” series this month that showcases top NMSU student ensembles. On Saturday, the series continues when Simon Gollo conducts a concert of the NMSU Philharmonia playing music by Bartok and Mozart. Both concerts are at the Atkinson Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m.
