NMSU Selects New Graduate School Dean

Dr. Loui Reyes, NMSU

Longtime New Mexico State University administrator and faculty member Loui Reyes has been selected to lead the university’s Graduate School after a nationwide search.

“Dr. Loui Reyes has built a reputation for integrity and inclusiveness during his time as associate dean and as interim dean,” said Provost Dan Howard. “I am especially pleased with his outreach to departments and colleges and his work to improve the admissions process for our graduate students. During the interview process, he gave voice to a strong vision for the future of the Graduate School. I am very pleased that he will have an opportunity to turn that vision into reality.”

Reyes has served in leadership roles – interim associate dean, associate dean and interim dean – in the Graduate School since 2011. He was a faculty member in the College of Education’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction from 2000-2012.

“I am honored to be the dean of the Graduate School and look forward to working with our provost, deans, graduate faculty and staff at restoring our commitment to graduate education so that NMSU is once again a best hope for the next generation of scholars,” Reyes said.

As an NMSU faculty member, Reyes served as an associate professor in early childhood, bilingual education and educational technologies from 2006-2012. He is eligible for full professor. From 2000-2006, Reyes was an assistant professor with early childhood and bilingual education as his specialty areas.

Reyes was a field-based instructor for Wheelock College in Boston from 1997-1999, was a visiting bilingual teacher at the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica in 1996, a part-time instructor at the University of Texas at El Paso in 1994 and a part-time instructor at El Paso Community College from 1991-1993.

Reyes completed post-doctoral work in educational learning technologies at NMSU in 2003 and earned his Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction, with a focus in early childhood education and bilingual education, at NMSU in 1997. He holds a master’s degree in teaching: curriculum and instruction as well as a bachelor’s degree in social work, both from NMSU.

Prior to his career in academia, Reyes served as director of the Children, Youth and Family Program’s Home Education Livelihood Program from 1977-1997.
