NMSU Students Compete In Campus Conservation Nationals

Students at New Mexico State University are trying to reduce energy and water use as part of a national competition.  Campus Conservation Nationals is the largest electricity and water reduction competition…with more than 175 schools competing this year.  Organizers include the U.S. Green Building Council and the National Wildlife Federation.

At NMSU, residence halls are competing to see which community can use the least energy.  Lawrence Hittle is the Vice President of NMSU’s Residence Hall Association.  He says it’s important for students to learn about sustainability and how to make a difference.

NMSU Facilities and Services will take a final reading on the last day of the competition, March 15.  Then, they’ll determine which residence hall used the least energy in proximity to its size.

In 2012, NMSU earned a Gold Star rating for its sustainability from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. The university has performed many upgrades over the last five years, beginning with green building projects, a toner recycling program and water fountains designed to fill water bottles to reduce waste.
