NMSU Voters Discuss 2016 Election

A new USA TODAY/ Rock the Vote poll released this week shows 56% of young voters supporting Hillary Clinton, with only 20% saying they support Donald Trump.

Many young voters at NMSU still have not made up their mind about which candidate they plan on supporting come November, and those who have decided are leaning toward the Democrat.

“Do you know what candidate your leaning toward?” “Hillary,” Anne Elwess.

“I don’t know,” Caleb Terrell said. “I think it’s a pretty tough decision, I don’t really like either candidate to be quite honest. I don’t know. I think I’m leaning more toward Clinton then toward Trump.”

“Probably Hillary,” Danielle Bowdre said.

“Probably more democratic or liberal maybe,” James Naranjo said.

“Because I’m not convinced of either Trump or Hillary,” Emanuel Krinkey said. “I feel like both of them are really shady. They go around and don’t answer their own questions.”

Those leaning toward Hillary in November are doing so for a variety of reasons.

“Donald Trump is a businessman and knows nothing about politics,” Javani Eddings said. “Versus Hillary who knows a lot more. I mean, she’s not the best. She’s kind of a crooked liar, but she’s a lot better than Trump.”

“Honestly, She has a lot better choices then Trump does,” Anne Elwess said. “I actually believe that she is actually going to do the stuff rather then Trump.”

“I don’t like Trump’s ignorance and arrogance,” Caleb Terrell said. “He talks about things that he doesn’t understand first hand.”

“Probably college education,” James Naranjo said. “Immigration, and just like the social issues.”

“If she becomes President,” Anne Elwess said. “She’s the first woman president and I think that’s going to open up a lot of opportunity for women.”

Clinton also has most of the support of young voters who previously supported Bernie Sanders with 72%.
