North Texas Schools Preach Fighting Back Against Intruders

A handful of North Texas school districts are training teachers to respond to armed intruders, not immediately drop and hide.

In Fort Worth, more than 120 officers trained over the summer on how to assist school districts interested in a strategy sometimes known as "Avoid-Deny-Defend."

According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the three steps call on teachers to help students flee to safety, then deny a possible intruder access to the classroom, then defend themselves if an intruder enters.

Fort Worth officer Stephanie Warren told the newspaper, "We want them to defend themselves and fight like their life depends on it."

Hundreds of educators in Fort Worth and suburban schools have undergone training under those guidelines.
