A Las Cruces Police officer received a bite wound while trying to contain a suspect and the man suspected of inflicting the injury was arrested Sunday evening.

Charles McNally, 53, of the 1900 block of Carlyle Drive, is charged with one count of battery upon a peace officer and one count of resisting an officer.

Shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday, July 12, Las Cruces Police were dispatched to the report of a domestic disturbance at McNally’s residence. As officers began to investigate the claims, McNally became belligerent and attempted to enter the home, ignoring lawful commands to remain outdoors.

As the officers tried to prevent McNally from entering the house, McNally became increasingly aggressive and bit the wrist of one of the officers. McNally continued to struggle and dug his fingernails into the officer’s arm, breaking the skin and causing bleeding.

The officers were subsequently able to handcuff McNally and take him into custody. The injured officer was treated and resumed his regular duties.

No charges were immediately filed in relation to the domestic disturbance claim. McNally was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center but has since posted bond.
