Officials Hope To Extend Landfill Life 200 Years

A gigantic landfill that takes in trash from southern New Mexico is seeking to extend its life to 200 years.

The proposal is part of the first permit renewal process for the Corralitos Landfill since its inception nearly two decades ago. The facility is about 15 miles west of Las Cruces, and serves Dona Ana County.

Patrick Peck, executive director for the South Central Solid Waste Authority, says under the existing plan, the landfill would last 100 years.

Peck say the waste authority, governed by a joint board of city and county officials, will submit the first draft of its permit application in June to state environment department officials.

The approval process is expected to take three years.
