Onate Football Player Dies; Suspect To Be Charged With Murder

By KRWG News

Las Cruces – Las Cruces authorities say a high school football player attacked while leaving a party last weekend has died.

Authorities say 18-year-old Jerry Zamarripa died Saturday at University Medical Center in El Paso. He played football as Onate High School in Las Cruces.

The Las Cruces Sun-News says Zamarripa had been on life support. He reportedly was struck twice in the head with a golf club on Feb. 20 while leaving an underage drinking party at a Las Cruces home.

District Attorney Amy Orlando says an amended complaint is being filed in court, accusing a 24-year-old suspect with an open count of murder.

Andrew "Tuna" Martinez was arrested Friday night by the Dona Ana Sheriff's Office in the case. It's unclear Saturday whether Martinez has legal representation.
