Outrage In El Paso Over UT Decision To Cancel Event Over "Safety"

El Paso officials are demanding more information about the security threat that prompted the University of Texas system to block a boxing match at the Sun Bowl.

City Manager Joyce Wilson said Wednesday she wants Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa to produce evidence of the safety issues ahead of the scheduled June 16 fight between WBC world middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., of Mexico, and Andy Lee, of Ireland.

In a statement Tuesday, the UT system said the scheduled fight posed a "higher than normal" risk and that the stadium "would not be an appropriate venue."

City officials have long complained El Paso is falsely portrayed as a war zone because of drug violence across the Mexican border. It ranks among the nation's safest cities in terms of violent crime.
