Owl Rescue In Las Cruces

Las Cruces Fire Department assisted the New Mexico Game and Fish Department with the rescue of a Great Horn Owl fledgling.  Officers from the New Mexico Game and Fish Department contacted The Las Cruces Fire Department Tuesday to ask for assistance with the rescue of a Great Horn Owl that was stuck on top of a local business sign.

Las Cruces Fire Department Truck One, which is an aerial apparatus, responded to the Cattlemen’s Steak House located at 3375 Bataan Memorial. Once arriving on scene Las Cruces Fire Department Truck One set up aerial operations and lifted a New Mexico Game and Fish officer to the top of the sign. The officer examined the owl for injuries before attempting to extract it from the canopy it was stuck on. Once the officer determined that no further injury would occur, the officer cut the canopy and then removed the owl. Both the officer and the owl were lowered to safety were the New Mexico Game and Fish Department determined that the owl would need medical attention.

With the dry conditions and lack of rain, residents might see an increase in wildlife looking for food and water. The Las Cruces Fire Department would like to remind residents not to engage with them and to contact the New Mexico Game and Fish at (575)532-2100 or Central Dispatch at (575)526-0795.
