Santa Fe, New Mexico – SANTA FE, N.M. (KRWG) A House panel expects to hire a lawyer later this week to handle an investigation of whether Public Regulation Commissioner Jerome Block Jr. should be impeached for misconduct in office.
Rep. Joseph Cervantes, a Las Cruces Democrat and co-chairman of the impeachment panel, said Tuesday about half a dozen lawyers are under consideration. He declined to name them, but said someone likely will be hired by Thursday when the subcommittee meets again.
The panel on Tuesday reviewed rules and procedures for investigating and deciding whether to recommend impeachment by the House.
Block is under investigation by the attorney general's office for possible misuse of a state-issued gasoline card. He's also facing criminal charges for campaign finance violations during his 2008 race for a seat on the utility regulatory agency.
