Peanut Butter Plant Plans March Restart

The country's largest organic peanut butter processor linked to a national salmonella outbreak says it plans to fully reopen in March but didn't know when its products will be back in stores.

Sunland Inc. spokeswoman Katalin Coburn said Friday that the Portales-based company has rehired employees at its peanut mill and will soon hire back workers at the peanut butter mill.

The company's peanut processing and peanut butter plant had been shuttered since the recall in September but the Food and Drug Administration said last month it could reopen.

Sunland recalled more than 100 nut and nut butter products after the outbreak. Forty-one illnesses in 20 states were linked to the peanut butter.

Coburn says changes at the mills will put the company ahead of new FDA guidelines.
