Pearce Applauds Gila River Diversion

Rep. Steve Pearce (R-NM 2)

Today, the Interstate Stream Commission (ISC) voted to accept $128 million in federal funding to claim 14,000 acre feet of water from the Gila River. Under the Arizona Water Settlements Act of 2004, the State of New Mexico has the legal right to claim the water and take the funds by December 31, 2014.

“I applaud the ISC for doing what is best for New Mexico:  ignoring special interest groups, and acquiring much-needed water that the state is legally entitled to,” said Pearce. “For almost a decade, there has been a spirited debate over whether or not to proceed with a plan to take this water. Had the State not taken it, we would have lost millions of gallons of water that New Mexicans desperately need. Instead, the ISC came up with a plan that will move water to thousands of households in Southwestern New Mexico.”
