Pearce Looks Forward To More Details From Trump Administration On Afghanistan Efforts

Rep. Steve Pearce (R) New Mexico

Commentary: Congressman Steve Pearce today released the following statement after President Trump outlined his military strategy in Afghanistan:

"The United States has been sending our nation’s troops into harm’s way in Afghanistan since 2001. As a new Administration working to devise a strategy for winning the war in Afghanistan, it is imperative that President Trump seek the advice of his Generals and military leaders. We are fighting a generational war that requires this kind of collaboration for the success of our armed forces, strengthening the Afghan government, and stabilizing the region. Most importantly though, the United States cannot repeat the mistakes made in Iraq, which led to the rise of ISIS.

It is clear tonight that President Trump took the time to confer with his military leaders to establish a pathway forward in Afghanistan, and understands the weight that these military decisions carry. The challenges and sacrifices made by men and women in the armed forces, as well as their children and spouses, are not to be taken lightly. When I served in Vietnam, the government lost faith in our mission, and forgot about us. By addressing the nation, the President is reiterating this is a mistake that must never be repeated.

As I stated under both the Bush and Obama Administrations, the President as Commander-in-Chief has the responsibility to lay out an actionable path to success. In the coming days and weeks, I look forward to seeing greater detail from the Administration about how our military plans on completing its mission in Afghanistan. If we are to risk more American lives, the President must be steadfast in his resolve to complete the mission, and win."
