Pearce Votes Against Homeland Security Budget

Rep. Steve Pearce (R-NM 2)

Washington, D.C. - Today, the House voted on a pair of bills relating to the funding of the Department of Homeland Security.  The first, in accordance with the regular legislative process, called on the House and the Senate to debate the difference between the two chambers’ bills (a formal Conference).  The other was the House suggestion to provide an additional three weeks of funding to allow the Conference to go forward.  U.S. Representative Steve Pearce (N.M.-02) issued the following statement:

“In November, the people sent an overwhelming message to Congress that they were tired of an ineffective, broken Washington.  One of the most glaring examples is President Obama’s continual unlawful and unilateral actions,” stated Pearce.  “Nearly a month ago, the House responded to the people’s calls by passing a bill that fully funds the Department of Homeland Security, while also prohibiting the President’s executive order.”

“After weeks of delays, the Senate has chosen a different path.  They have opted to move forward with a DHS funding bill that allows the President to continue his reckless and unconstitutional actions.

Pearce continued:  “In the November elections the people voted not for Republicans or Democrats, but for a new beginning, for a Government that would work for them.  The House’s vote today to begin a Conference, or dialogue, with the Senate over the differences in the two versions of the bill – demonstrates that the process can work.  By contrast, the Senate voted today to continue Congress’s old broken ways.

“I cannot vote to support the brinkmanship that has been displayed throughout the past month.  For the past four years, both the House and the Senate have waited until the last minute, which is a horrible policy.   It is part of what is broken in Washington.  Washington needs to be shaken up; it must do its job in the timeframe it provides itself.”
