People In Las Cruces Gather To Watch The Pope's Address To Congress

Pope Francis’ visit to the United States is creating excitement across the country, including in Las Cruces

People of all faiths gathered at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral to listen to the Pope’s address, and discuss what it means to Las Cruces.

Father Bill McCann, Rector at Immaculate Heart of Mary, says it’s great to see people excited about the Pope’s visit.

“People seem to really like him,” McCann said. “Even those who aren’t Catholic, and he enjoys a lot of respect and you could see that. And that seems to be not only in New Mexico, but throughout the Country.”

He says it was great to see a Pope bring the message of the Catholic Church to congress.

“He was hitting all the major points of what we call the Catholic social teaching,” McCann said. “He talked about solidarity, and the common good. And the dignity of every human being, and so forth.”

The Pope’s address touched on immigration, poverty, and climate change. And those watching the address, Catholics and non-Catholics alike, felt that both politicians and everyday citizens could take something away from his message.

“The importance of equality for all,” Glenn Vick said. “Not just the few, but everybody should have a fighting chance in life, and that is a strong message that we all have to stand together in solidarity. And that we have to help each other up, and keep our dreams alive, and keep moving forward.”

“I fell very excited with what I heard,” Ken Servais said. “Because it is a call to all our community to join together in solidarity. To really be concerned about the common good, of those that are excluded.”

“Totally contrary to what we now expect from our congress,” Dr. Judy Long said. “About working for the common good. The political process should have that destination.”

Johanna Bencomo with New Mexico Café helped to organize the watch party, and says its important not only for congress to work on the Pope’s message, but also for local communities.

“As café,” Bencomo said. “We really feel called to answer the Pope’s call, the Pope’s message of radical inclusivity, and really putting our faith in action. And I think the Pope embodies love in action, and faith in action. And we wanted to support his message locally.”

Father Bill McCann says it’s great to see the Pope’s message reaching a larger audience.

“This Pope is kind of expanding to reach people that have never been particularly drawn to the Catholic Church or Catholic teaching,” McCann said. “So, I think it’s good. I hope his message inspires people.”
