Petitions Certified For ABQ Abortion Measure

Albuquerque's city clerk office's says petitions on new abortion restrictions have valid voter signatures and have been certified.

The officer said Wednesday that the results were verified and have been forwarded to city councilors.

The measure would generally prohibit women from having abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

The City Council could put the measure on a ballot in November, which is when Albuquerque would hold a City Council runoff election, or on a later special election ballot.

City Clerk Amy Bailey says holding a special election could cost roughly $600,000.

Opponents say they expect to challenge the measure in court.
