Las Cruces – After being surrendered to the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley, a mellow black female Labrador/Great Dane mix is looking for a permanent home.
The dog was brought to the shelter on Oct. 19 from White Sands Missile Range, where she lived with her owners after they adopted her from another family who couldn't keep her. Shelter staff estimates she is about three years old, has not been spayed, and has mothered at least one litter of puppies.
She also tested positive for heartworm, which makes her a free adoption according to shelter Executive Director Dr. Beth Vesco-Mock.
"We will treat her like every other adoption," Vesco-Mock said. "She will be spayed and micro-chipped, but the subsequent adoption will be free of charge. We want to find her a family."
Vesco-Mock says providing free adoptions for heartworm-positive dogs with gentle dispositions helps to keep the population down at the shelter, and reduces the number of animals that ultimately must be destroyed.
She also says people considering adopting dogs like this one can work with their own veterinarians on drug-management protocols to treat the heartworm.
