New Mexico education officials say teachers at risk of losing their license because of poor evaluations may be eligible for a reprieve. The New Mexico Public Education Department released a memorandum Friday, saying teachers with low ratings can apply for a one-year extension on their license from their school district.
Teachers rated "ineffective" or "minimally effective" under the state's new evaluation system last year were likely to not be allowed a license renewal.
But Education Secretary-designate Hanna Skandera said last summer that negatively-rated teachers would be allowed to submit a dossier to move up the state's three-tiered licensure system, depending on a principal's approval.
Some education advocates say the procedures in the Dec. 22 memorandum conflict with current state rules.
