A South Texas sheriff says a gun's been found that may be the weapon used to kill an off-duty Border Patrol agent shot while fishing with his family earlier this month.
Two men from Mexico are held without bond and face capital murder and other charges after 36-year-old Agent Javier Vega Jr., of Kingsville, was fatally shot and his father wounded during an attempted robbery.
Willacy County Sheriff Larry Spence tells The Monitor of McAllen the gun was found outside a home where 30-year-old Gustavo Tijerina and 40-year-old Ismael Hernandez were arrested Aug. 4. A man cutting grass at the house spotted the weapon and called police.
Spence says investigators also are analyzing shell casings from the shooting scene. A preliminary investigation showed Vega's mother may have returned fire.
