“The Presidency and the Press: Will Free Speech Survive?” At NMSU Las Cruces

Peter Goodman

The NMSU Library will host a panel discussion, “The Presidency and the Press: Will Free Speech Survive?” at 5:30 p.m., March 9. The program will honor Sunshine Week, an annual event that focuses on open government and access to public information.

Participating panelists will discuss the modern media environment, the propagation of “fake news,” and legal threats faced by journalists, among other topics. Please join us as our panelists discuss the dangers posed to free speech.

The program, in its fifth year, is presented by the NMSU Library, NMSU Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, and NMSU Alumnus Tim Parker. It will be held on the 3rd floor of Zuhl Library on NMSU’s campus.

Panelists include:

  • Walter Rubel, Opinion Page Editor at Las Cruces Sun-News
  • Nelson Goodin, Dona Ana County Attorney
  • Frank Thayer, Emeritus Professor, Journalism and Mass Communications, NMSU
  • David Irvin, Business Librarian, NMSU

Peter Goodman, a local writer, photographer and lawyer, will open the program with a historical review of how U.S. Presidents have related to the press. He will also moderate the panel discussion. The audience is welcome to participate with questions and a reception with the panelists to follow the event.
Previous years’ programs have focused on outside influence on local elections and officer-involved shootings.

Free parking will be available on the NMSU campus after 4:30 p.m. For questions or further information, please contact Reference and Research Services Librarian David Irvin at dirv@ad.nmsu.edu or (575) 646-6925.
