Probation Revoked For Las Cruces Murder Suspect

An 18-year-old Las Cruces man accused of first-degree murder in the shooting death of 17-year-old Jaycob Alba was arrested Wednesday afternoon after his probation was revoked.

Jordan Gift was arrested by Doña Ana County Sheriff’s deputies at the juvenile probation office just after 3 p.m. He was transported to the Doña Ana County Detention Center where he is being held without bond.

According to court documents, Gift was placed on a six-month consent decree on July 21, 2015, after he was charged with two counts of burglary of a vehicle. His arrest on Aug. 1 directly violates the order that states Gift shall not possess any weapons or associate with any person possessing or using weapons.

Gift was arrested last week after he and three accomplices allegedly attempted to carry out a home invasion-style robbery at a mobile home in the 2600 block of Doña Ana Road. According to sheriff’s detectives, Gift was joined by 17-year-old Daniel Munoz, D’Shaun Hermans and Adrian Hortelano, both 18. The group allegedly went to the mobile home park to retrieve a firearm that Hortelano told the rest of the group had been stolen from him.

All four teens were charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit a crime, aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, attempted aggravated burglary, shooting at a dwelling or occupied building and tampering with evidence.

Gift was released on a $50,000 secured bond Tuesday, which had been set by Judge Beverly Singleman.

“It is very concerning that a violent offender can be back in our community in a matter of hours,” said Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department Major Brent Barlow of Gift’s release. “After we learned he had violated the terms of his probation, our deputies worked diligently to ensure this individual was back in custody. While we understand bonds are set to ensure the accused will appear in court, we must also consider the risk that is posed to the public by such a release.”

The shooting death of Alba is still under investigation by the sheriff’s department. Detectives are still collecting evidence and processing information from the scene on Aug. 1.
