A proposed nondiscrimination ordinance in San Antonio that is similar to others already adopted in other cities in Texas and around the U.S. is stirring opposition among top Republicans and conservatives.
The San Antonio City Council on Thursday is scheduled to vote on adding discrimination protections for sexual orientation and gender identity. The Human Rights Campaign says nearly 180 cities nationwide have adopted similar protections.
But Republicans including U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz have met the proposal with disapproval. They say the ordinance could wind up discriminating against a person's religious beliefs.
San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro says the additions to the city's nondiscrimination ordinance are overdue. Castro was the keynote speaker at last year's Democratic National Convention. He says the opposition may give outsiders the wrong impression about the city.
