Public Invited To View, Critique Flood Management Plan

Doña Ana County residents are invited to weigh-in on flood-management plans for several at-risk areas in the county during a question-and-answer session Thursday with the Doña Ana County Flood Commission.

The meeting will take place Jan. 29 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in Room 113 of the Doña Ana County Government Center, 845 N. Motel Blvd., in Las Cruces.

Up for discussion are the preliminary flood insurance rate maps and a flood insurance study report issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Each document lists what areas in Doña Ana County are at risk for flooding in the following communities: Anthony, Las Cruces, Sunland Park, Mesilla, Hatch and several  unincorporated areas.

By law, the public has to be given an opportunity to ask questions about the proposed flood-management systems.

Copies of the FEMA maps will be available at Thursday’s meeting. Sunland Park residents can obtain copies during normal business hours at Sunland Park City Hall, 1000 McNutt Road.

For more information, contact Dwaine Solana in Sunland Park at (575) 589-3631, or Carl Lukesh with the Doña Ana County Flood Commission at (575) 525-5566.
