Albuquerque's school system is pushing back against the state's soon-to-be-implemented rule on teacher evaluation system. According to the Albuquerque Journal, school board members are talking about defying the state's system and moving forward with the district's own version.
Both systems consider improvements in students' test scores but the state's system puts more emphasis on that. The two systems also have differ on how to observe teachers' classrooms.
Albuquerque board members say the state system places unreasonable and unfunded demands on principals and districts.
State Public Education Department spokesman Larry Behrens says the state system will recognize what he calls teachers' "greatness in the classroom."
The state's rule is set to take effect this fall. Teachers rated ineffective or minimally effective would be placed on improvement plans.
