A newspaper survey finds that groups fighting over access to the courtroom and limits on lawsuits have pumped millions of dollars into usually low-spending races for the Texas Legislature.
An analysis of campaign reports by The Dallas Morning News published Saturday found that Texans for Lawsuit Reform and Houston home builder Bob Perry have combined for almost $1.7 million in contributions over the last five weeks to Republican candidates.
However, according to the newspaper's findings, the strength of those groups has been offset somewhat by $1 million donated to Democrats by plaintiffs' lawyers and organizations they dominate.
Perry, who isn't related to Gov. Rick Perry, has been a fixture of GOP fundraising in the state and nationally dating back to former President George W. Bush's gubernatorial races.
