A Real Dilemma For The GOP

Commentary: The dilemma the Republicans find themselves in reminds me of  a children's story by Hans Christian Anderson, The Emperor's New Clothes.  In the story, the Emperor is so obsessed with buying himself the finest garments that the kingdom begins to suffer.  He ignores the laments of his people and falls prey to two hucksters who profess to offer him the most magnificent clothing ever created.

The con artists dress the emperor in the supposed clothing--in reality nothing more than their imagination.  They then have a grand parade with the Emperor strutting in these invisible garments.

The con-men tell the public about the exquisite, one of a kind garments the Emperor is wearing.

The people applaud the Emperor's finery as he passes by.  All except one little boy.  Before the child's mother could shut him up, the boy said, "but he has nothing on!"  Then he repeated his observation.

The crowd gasps collectively, then begin to snicker, and finally laugh out loud.  Helplessly the Emperor marches back to the castle.

I see Paul Ryan as that astute child.
