Socorro, TX – Voters in Socorro will decide whether to remove indicted Mayor Guillermo "Willie" Gandara Sr. and a city councilman arrested in a drug case.
The city council Wednesday night approved holding a recall election. The ordinance says the criminal charges damage the reputation and public image of Socorro.
Gandara, who is accused of conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud when he was a school board member, says the citizens should decide whether they want him as mayor.
Councilman Luis Varela was arrested Nov. 16 and charged with possession of a controlled substance. Varela was not at Wednesday's meeting.
Socorro will work with election officials in El Paso County to decide the date, cost and poll locations.
