Renewable Portfolio Standard Costs To Be Listed Separately On El Paso Electric NM Bills

New Mexico – On October 25, 2017, the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission approved a Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) line item in bills for El Paso Electric (EPE) customers in New Mexico.  This line item or rider, as they are called, is not a new charge or cost to customers. This new rider will clearly identify costs associated with complying with New Mexico’s RPS by appearing as a standalone line item in bills beginning January 1, 2018. Currently, the costs associated with the RPS are included in the monthly fuel charge on bills. Due to the separation of these costs, the fuel charge will be reduced by an equivalent amount. Fuel charges are listed as Fuel and Purchased Power Cost Adjustment on bills.

About the New Mexico Renewable Energy Standard

The New Mexico Renewable Energy Standard (RPS) requires all investor-owned utilities in New Mexico to provide a certain percentage of energy to New Mexico customers from renewable resources, such as large solar generation facilities.
