REPORT: 133,000 New Mexicans Lose Healthcare Coverage Under Senate Republican Repeal

Commentary: New Mexico - Today the Center for American Progress released an analysis of the Senate Republican healthcare repeal. According to the report, 133,000 New Mexicans would lose healthcare coverage.

“It’s obvious that Republicans do not want to increase healthcare coverage, and instead they have created a plan that will give millionaires and billionaires tax breaks, so they can take our county back to the days when healthcare coverage was inaccessible for families across New Mexico,” said Richard Ellenberg, Chair of the Democratic Party of New Mexico. “Democrats are fighting to keep our families covered and ensure we can build on the progress we have already made.”

According the Center for American Progress report, 117,300 New Mexicans would lose Medicaid coverage and 16,000 New Mexicans would lose individual market coverage under the Senate Republican healthcare repeal.

Congressman Steve Pearce voted for the House Republican version of the bill which would throw even more New Mexicans of their healthcare coverage. Governor Susana Martinez and Lt. Governor John Sanchez have not weighed in on the bill, despite the grim forecasts.

In an effort to get a full understanding of what the repeal of the Affordable Care Act would mean for New Mexicans, the Democratic Party of New Mexico released a story board which contains videos of residents sharing their concerns about the healthcare repeal.
