A new study says…New Mexico’s Second District would be see one of the largest impacts in the nation if the federal minimum wage was increased to $10.10/hour.

The Oxfam America study says a federal minimum wage would benefit 25 million workers and their families.

The study says 62,000 workers in New Mexico’s Second district would benefit from increasing the minimum wage to $10.10.  In terms of impact from a minimum wage hike…it’s near the top….31st of 436 Congressional districts

That’s because in New Mexico’s Second district….Oxfam says…more than 16 percent of workers live in poverty…and nearly 42 percent are below 200 percent of the poverty line.

The group Café is gathering petition signatures to put a $10.10 minimum wage on the Las Cruces ballot in November.  This comes after the city council recently approved a minimum wage of $8.50 by 2016.

A new national poll this week commissioned by CNN found 71 percent favor an increase in the federal minimum wage….and a majority…52 percent say the minimum wage should be $10.10 an hour or higher.  19% said it should be less than $10.10.
