An inmate killed in a gang-related attack at a Las Cruces state prison was stabbed more than 40 times, according to an autopsy report released this week.
The state Office of the Medical Investigator found 34-year-old Javier Enrique Molina suffered 43 stab wounds and five other cuts.
The report states the fatal blows were to his heart and lungs.
Molina was stabbed March 7 in a common area at the Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility.
New Mexico State Police say the assault involved several inmates.
Inmates Jerry Armenta and Jerry Montoya are awaiting trial on several charges for the killing, including first-degree murder.
Molina was serving a 13-year sentence for armed robbery, evidence tampering, escape from jail and forgery.
