Report: Some West Texas Students Skipped Grades

An internal audit of a West Texas school district has found more than 200 students ended up skipping grades amid confusion about their transcripts.

Trustees of the Ysleta Independent School District on Monday night reviewed results that indicated no deliberate attempts to cheat on federal accountability rules.

Superintendent Xavier de la Torre says the district will create a uniform credit recovery procedure, instead of all 11 high schools using their own guidelines.

Trustees last spring had no cheating complaints but ordered the review for public accountability. Auditors studied six years of data on student placement and those with limited English proficiency or recent transfers, such as from Mexico.

Records show 177 students were skipped from ninth grade to 11th grade, while 41 students were moved from ninth to 12th grade.
