The University of New Mexico lags behind 16 peer institutions on average faculty pay for full professors, associate professors and assistant professors.
The Daily Lobo reports that new surveys of other universities show that UNM's average faculty salaries range from $7,000-$21,000 less.
In a January memo UNM Provost Chaouki Abdallah says the university was losing faculty members to other institutions partly because of the salary difference.
Abdallah is proposing to increase employee compensation and bring faculty salaries in line with those of peer institutions. But the proposal does not list a funding source for the increase.
Officials say it's up to the state to fund the university, then up to the Board of Regents to decide on what compensation increases.
