Las Cruces – It's been two weeks since Dona Ana County's district attorney and a 16-person task force closed the inquiry into a fatal shooting of a suspect by two police officers, saying the lawmen involved acted properly.
Now a New Mexico lawmaker and a city councilor in Las Cruces want to know why they're being denied access to the 1,000-page report about the matter.
Las Cruces police officers Isaiah Baker and Manuel Frias fatally shot 25-year-old Antonio Medrano Jr. on Jan. 17. Medrano allegedly advanced on officers armed with an 8-inch butcher knife and a bat despite repeated orders to surrender.
In the last two weeks, the City of Las Cruces has declined Councilor Miguel Silva and Rep. Andy Nunez's written requests to see the report and send it on to Attorney General Gary King for a possible review.
District Attorney Susana Martinez says the report may never be released, adding that reports on such matters are not open to members of the public when someone is cleared of an offense.
