Reprimand For Otero County Attorney

The Otero County Commission has reprimanded the county attorney for representing a commissioner's son in a driving while intoxicated case.

Commissioner Ronny Rardin said County Attorney Dan Bryant's contract with the county made it a conflict of interest for Bryant to also represent Commission Susan Flores' son.

According to the Alamogordo Daily News, Phillip Flores was arrested by the county Sheriff's Department in July 2012.

Phillip Flores initially was represented by another attorney for the firm that employed Bryant, and Bryant began representing him when the other attorney stepped aside.

Bryant said he took over the case because Phillip Flores had already paid the firm for representation.

Rardin said the problem was Bryant representing somebody in a case involving the county, not representation of a commissioner's son.
