Commentary: The Democratic Party of New Mexico is intentionally misinforming New Mexicans by distorting the truth about Congressman Steve Pearce’s support for Medicaid funding and healthcare for the most vulnerable.
The attacks by Richard Ellis are outright false. The healthcare reform bill Congressman Pearce supported INCREASES Medicaid funding over the next ten years. According to projections by the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, Medicaid funding will increase by more than 20 percent during the legislation’s ten-year budget window. The bill allows Medicaid to grow at a sustainable pace, providing a solution to costs that are set to skyrocket under current law.
“New Mexico Democrats are shamelessly misleading the public about Congressman Pearce’s healthcare vote in an attempt to gain political points,” said Ryan Cangiolosi, Chairman of the Republican Party of New Mexico. “This kind of blatant dishonesty is good for a headline, but it does nothing to reach a solution for healthcare on behalf of struggling New Mexicans. Steve Pearce always does what’s best for New Mexico and that’s why he supported a bill that increases Medicaid funding and protects the most vulnerable New Mexicans.”
“We should be debating substantive policy, but DPNM would rather misinform voters of what is actually happening,” Cangiolosi added. “Only in politics is an increase of funding is defined as a cut.”
These disingenuous attacks do nothing to fix the broken status quo. If the Democratic Party is serious about fixing healthcare, they should start by having an honest conversation about the problems New Mexicans face and efforts on the table to address those problems. Blatantly distorting the record for political gain is classic DPNM strategy and has failed New Mexicans time and time again.
