Reward For Suspect In Las Cruces Stabbing

Las Cruces – Las Cruces Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of $1,000 for information that leads to the arrest of the suspect who stabbed a woman last Thursday on the campus of New Mexico State University.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Ismael Zambrano Chavira, 38, who is charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. A $30,000 cash-only bond has been set and New Mexico State University police are considering additional charges again Chavira.

At approximately 7 a.m. on June 10, 2010, New Mexico State University police were called to the parking lot of the greenhouses, at the Arrowhead Research Park on campus, where they found a 38-year-old woman with multiple stab wounds. The victim was airlifted to University Medical Center of El Paso for treatment of what turned out to be non-life-threatening injuries.

NMSU-PD investigators learned that Chavira stabbed the woman multiple times and then fled the area in a Dodge car. The vehicle was located Thursday afternoon near the town of Mesquite, in unincorporated Dona Ana County, but the whereabouts of Chavira are still unknown.

Chavira is Hispanic, 5-feet-6-inches tall, and has black hair and brown eyes.
