Roswell Considers Realigning River

Chavez County may realign part of the course of the Berrendo River in the Roswell area in the wake of flooding last September.

County Flood Control Superintendent Dick Smith says he's in the early stages of designing a plan to protect homes and businesses next to the river.

The Roswell Daily Record reports that the work could involve straightening the river's current meandering path.

That work could include bypassing a looped section of the river and building a dam to straighten the river.

Smith says removal of excess vegetation helps keep water flowing smoothly but that there was damage from the September flooding nonetheless.
