Deming – The former treasurer of the Deming Rotary Club has been sentenced to 9 years probation for embezzling an estimated $50,000 from the group.
Sixth Judicial District Court Judge Daniel Viramontes rejected a prosecutor's request that he send Kimberly Jackson to prison for two years for the crime, which happened between 2007 and 2009.
Jackson has repaid about $20,000 of the money. She apologized during last week's court hearing, telling Viramontes that she "made a really bad mistake" and takes responsibility for her actions. She said she suffers from depression and when she's depressed, she goes shopping.
The Rotary learned of embezzlement last February. Jackson pleaded guilty in October to embezzlement of more than $20,000, a second-degree felony.
