Rough Road Conditions In Parts Of New Mexico

Roads across northern New Mexico are snowpacked and icy as a winter storm system bears down on much of the state, bringing rain, snow, wind and freezing temperatures.

The state Department of Transportation says crews are busy plowing and spreading cinder along Interstate 25 and other highways.

Officials are warning travelers to slow down and be cautious.

The wintery weather also prompted some schools to delay opening Friday, while others closed early.

The Eastern New Mexico University campus in Portales closed early due to worsening road conditions.

Officials at Carlsbad Caverns National Park in southeastern New Mexico closed the park early due to icy roads.

Forecasters say the eastern plains didn't get as much freezing rain as expected but the second wave of the storm was scheduled to hit overnight Saturday.
