"Ruben Salazar Day" Proclaimed By El Paso City Council

Today the El Paso City Council recognized April 22, 2014 as “Ruben Salazar Day.” Today’s proclamation marks the first time that El Paso has recognized Ruben Salazar for his contributions and significance.

Born in Juarez and raised in El Paso, Ruben Salazar is an El Paso-area son. After graduating from El Paso High School and starting his journalism career at the El Paso Herald-Post, Salazar got his big break with The Los Angeles Times in 1959, at a time when the staff was nearly 100 percent white and male.

Representative Lily Limon stated, “Today we celebrate and recognize the tremendous legacy of El Paso raised Ruben Salazar whose life was devoted to amplifying the strength of the Mexican-American community voice and whose work has endured through the Chicano movement”.

El Paso icon Rosa Guerrero stated that “Ruben Salazar has long been a icon for the Chicano civil rights movement and it is important for us to remember the tragedy of his death and the turbulent times we have endured. Today recognizing the strength of his work and his enduring legacy inspires us all to be visionaries and hopefully inspires young journalists to follow his path of speaking the truth and bridging the divides.”

Ruben Salazar’s story of transformation from a mainstream, establishment reporter to a primary chronicler and supporter of the Chicano movement of the late 1960s is highlighted in the documentary, Ruben Salazar: Man in the Middle premiering on KRWG-TV April 29 at 8pm.
