Safeguarding Old Mines

New Mexico – The New Mexico Mining and Minerals Division has awarded contracts to two companies to safeguard nearly three dozen abandoned mine openings in Sierra and Socorro counties.

Pioneer Industries Inc. of Albuquerque was awarded nearly $390,000 for the work in Sierra County. The final phase at Lake Valley includes the construction of structures to allow bats to continue to use underground mine workings.

The company will also use large, spent tires from earthmoving equipment to plug mine openings near the Lake Valley Historic Town site.

St. Cloud Mining Company of Winston was awarded more than $88,000 for the work in Socorro County. That project includes construction of polyurethane foam plugs and a large tire plug to protect bat habitat in an underground mine.
