Santa Fe Aims To Increase Access To Health Food

Santa Fe officials are rolling out a plan to help area residents get access to healthy food.

A Food Policy Council made up of local and county officials announced Friday an effort to address "food challenges."

The government advisory group conducted a three-year study in a region where centuries-old farming traditions still take place but youths deal with obesity and hunger.

The council says its main priorities are improving public transportation so low-income residents can easily get to grocery stores or farmers markets, increasing the presence of locally grown food in schools and preserving farmland.

The County Commission is expected to vote on adopting the plan Tuesday.

The Santa Fe City Council will vote on the plan at a later date.
