Two Santa Fe residents became the 1,000th same-sex couple to receive a marriage license from Santa Fe County.
The Santa Fe New Mexican reports that Kathy Chamberry and Marilyn Haring were married Monday by a magistrate judge after obtaining a license at the County Clerk's Office last week.
The 69-year-old Chambery formerly worked at the University of Massachusetts while the 72-year-old Haring worked for Purdue University in Indiana. They had a committed relationship for nearly two decades before getting married.
Santa Fe County began recognizing same-sex marriage last August in response to a court order.
The county issued hundreds of licenses for same-sex marriages in the following weeks, many to couples from out of state. That flood has since ebbed before picking up this spring.
