Santa Fe Forest Remains Closed To Public Access

The Santa Fe National Forest remains closed to public access through the extended holiday weekend despite isolated rain showers over the past week.

Forest Supervisor Maria Garcia says the showers have helped reduce fire danger and says forest officials are considering which parts of the forest can be reopened to the public next week.

However, Garcia says the forest will not reopen until conditions are safe.

Garcia says even after the forest reopens, emergency closures will remain in effect for the protection of public health and safety in areas affected by major fires that have burned approximately 70 square miles.

Post-fire work continues, and Garcia says there is still a concern of flash flooding in many areas downslope of burned areas.
