A middle school in Santa Fe was evacuated after a security guard found a handgun in a backpack.
Police descended on Ortiz Middle School after the discovery was made Thursday, and no injuries were reported.
Students were taken to a nearby police facility, where attendance was taken before the students were released to their parents.
Police spokeswoman Celina Espinoza said police detained four students for questioning and took one into custody following the incident.
It wasn't immediately known whether the gun was loaded and in working order.
School district official Latifah Phillips says the security guard checked the backpack at the suggestion of a student.
