Las Cruces, NM - On this edition of PUENTES, bridges to the community, host Emily Guerra meets with The Southwest Environmental Center (SWEC) Executive Director, Kevin Bixby. SWEC’s mission is to protect and restore wildlife and their habitats in the Southwest. He says that one of the most persecuted animals on the planet is the coyote, “people shoot ‘em on site just as a matter of principle.” Bixby says another thing they are trying to do is “to stop something called wildlife killing contests, which are usually coyote killing contests, where a group of people will compete for prizes or cash to see how many coyotes they can kill in a weekend. Sometimes it’s the biggest coyote they kill; sometimes it’s the smallest, which means the youngest. And there are a lot of these killing contests; New Mexico has more than most states.”
The Southwest Environmental Center is sponsoring a talk entitled “Coyote: Biography of an American Original” by Dan Flores, environmental historian and author of “Coyote America,” on Tuesday, September 13th at 7 pm at the Rio Grande Theatre in downtown Las Cruces. The talk is free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.wildmesquite.org.
