SBA Seeks Applicants for the Emerging Leaders Executive Level Training Program

ALBUQUERQUE – The New Mexico District Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is now accepting applications for the 2018 Emerging Leaders executive level training program designed for established small businesses that are poised for growth.

Here is the information provided by the SBA:

The program has graduated more than 100 talented New Mexico small business owners since its inception in 2008.  New this year, the SBA New Mexico District Office will host courses in two locations: Albuquerque and Las Cruces.

“Emerging Leaders fosters a learning environment that accelerates the growth of high-potential small businesses and has a positive ripple effect on the economy of New Mexico,” said John Garcia, SBA New Mexico District Director.  “The SBA New Mexico District Office has long offered this annual training program to the benefit of our state’s small business owners.  We are honored that at the national level, SBA recognized our participants’ successes and chose to open a second training program in New Mexico.  The SBA is delighted to begin our 11th year of Emerging Leaders with classes in both Albuquerque and Las Cruces.”

The Small Business Administration’s Emerging Leaders initiative provides free entrepreneurship education and training for executives of small, poised-for-growth companies that are potential job creators.  This intensive executive entrepreneurship series includes nearly 100 hours of classroom time.  It also provides opportunities for small business owners to work with experienced coaches and mentors, attend workshops, and develop connections with their peers, local leaders, and the financial community.  The course will run April – October of 2018 and applicants must apply online byMarch 1, 2018 at https://www.interise.org/sbaemergingleaders.

To be eligible to participate, businesses must:

·       Be in business for at least 3 years,

·       Have at least 1 employee besides themselves and

·       Have at least $400,000 in annual revenues.

Margaret L. Dubbin, President of IDEALS  Inc., a Las Cruces-based engineering and construction firm found the Emerging Leaders program so valuable, that she traveled to Albuquerque every other week in order to take advantage of the 2016 course.  “This program forced me to look critically at my business structure and clearly identify those areas and roles in the organization that do not align with IDEALS corporate values,” Dubbin said.  “My daily schedule is often interrupted with immediate issues that arise unexpectedly; there is never a convenient time to do this critical assessment.  By participating in the program it forced me to set aside the time to focus on the bigger picture.”

The Emerging Leaders Albuquerque and Las Cruces programs are two of 60 programs offered by the SBA nationwide.  Nationally, the SBA’s Emerging Leaders Initiative has trained over 5,000 small business owners, creating over 6,500 jobs, generating over $300 million in new financing, and securing over $3.16 billion in government contracts.
