Scare at Point of Entry

By KRWG News

Anthony – State police say a FedEx truck triggered radiological monitors at Anthony's port of entry after a shipper failed to mark a box of uranium ore.
Inspection bays were evacuated when high levels of gamma rays were detected after agents sent the truck to a bay for a closer inspection Thursday.
A radiological assistance team with detectors subsequently found the unmarked box.
Department of Public Safety spokesman Peter Olson says the material should have been marked as hazardous and FedEx should have been told about it.
He says the material was shipped by an out-of-state firefighter who travels and instructs people on how to detect radiological dirty bombs.
Authorities say alarms have been tripped by vehicles carrying material with naturally occurring low-level radioactivity, such as clay tiles, gravel or fertilizer.
